Video Games

The general public’s opinion of video games has changed dramatically over the past ten years, mainly due to the types of games being produced, the quality of the game as well as the graphics, and the increasing popularity of video games among usual people as opposed to people who work with computers or the like. The sheer differences between a game like Pacman that came out over twenty years ago in comparison to a game like The Sims or Little Big Planet are staggering.

There are many different reasons for this. One of the main ones is that with increased popularity comes increased need to make bigger and better games. Games like Pacman and Space Invaders were groundbreaking at the time they were created, but by modern standards are very basic: in some cases, people with little working knowledge of video game creation can successfully build and play similar games today. As these games became more popular, and game designers continued to invent new types of games and ways to make older types better, then games themselves gradually became more complex.

There is still a stigma attached to video games even today, despite increased popularity. Unfortunately there is a stereotype of video games being detrimental to social health, and even physical health in some cases, and there have been countless studies into the effects of playing video games on the mind, body and other aspects. Such claims are generally unjustified, as there has been little correlation between video games and poor health: but to be sure, play them in moderation.
